The vision for innovation in tidal range energy has just received a welcome boost.

CCR Energy has welcomed the publication of the 2025 Severn Estuary Tidal Energy Report, recently released by the Severn Estuary Commission, describing it as a helpful and encouraging development for organisations involved in tidal energy research and innovation.

The report marks a significant step in recognising the long-term potential of the Severn Estuary, home to the world’s second-highest tidal range, to contribute to the UK’s energy transition. It sets out a strong case for a coordinated national approach to tidal range infrastructure, with recommendations covering feasibility assessment, environmental planning, financing models and grid connectivity.

A National Opportunity with Regional Relevance

While the report does not commit to specific projects or funding, it sends a clear signal that tidal range could have an important role in the UK’s future energy mix. For CCR Energy, which is developing a programme of work at Aberthaw focused on low carbon innovation, it offers reassurance that current efforts are aligned with emerging national priorities.

“This report gives a sense of direction for the sector and shows that tidal range is being taken seriously at a strategic level,” said Tony Davies, Non-Executive Director of the CCR Energy Board.

“We’re pleased to see recognition of the potential within the Severn Estuary and welcome the report’s focus on collaboration and early-stage demonstration.”

Aberthaw and Early-Stage Innovation

One example of this early-stage activity is the planned tidal turbine testing facility at Aberthaw, where CCR Energy is working with partners to explore low-head, bi-directional turbine technology using existing infrastructure at the former power station site. While at an early phase, the project is consistent with the report’s emphasis on demonstration, technical learning, and asset reuse.

CCR Energy views the report as a useful framework that supports continued research and collaboration.

A Constructive Step Forward

The 2025 Severn Estuary Report offers a strong foundation for informed discussion and planning around tidal range energy. For CCR Energy and others in the region, it provides an opportunity to continue engaging in a shared conversation — one that balances innovation, evidence, and long-term potential.
