Our masterplan
At CCR Energy, we are transforming the Aberthaw Power Station site into a vibrant hub of sustainable energy, innovation, and community development. The Aberthaw Project is a multi-phase initiative dedicated to responsibly demolishing and remediating the former power station while laying the groundwork for a future defined by low-carbon living.
Our mission goes beyond achieving carbon neutrality; we aim to create an internationally competitive environment that enhances economic and social well-being. This project is about more than just reducing carbon emissions – it’s about building a thriving, sustainable community. With a focus on energy efficiency, cutting-edge facilities, and ongoing research and development, Aberthaw will be a beacon of innovation, attracting investment, generating jobs, and fostering a cluster of advanced technologies. We are committed to making a positive impact on the environment, positioning the Cardiff Capital Region as a global leader in sustainability and a destination for forward-thinking enterprises.
Demolition
Phase One will see the demolition of the Aberthaw Power Station over a three-year period. The contract to complete the demolition was awarded to Erith Contractors, a family-run, employee-owned trust established in 1967. WSP have been appointed by CCR Energy to help supervise and administer the demolition contract to ensure the highest standards of work are met as this ambitious project unfolds, leaving a lasting legacy of innovation and sustainability for the communities and economy of South-East Wales.
Given the complexities involved in demolishing and remediating a location that was home to a major coal-fired power station for half a century, the 500 acre site is split into five key zones. This will help accelerate development opportunities and support a demolition process that puts safety, environmental stewardship and community engagement at its core.
Phase 2 marks the commencement of mechanical demolition across the various zones following the careful and systematic asbestos removal process. This phase focuses on preparing each area for redevelopment, utilising heavy machinery to dismantle structures safely and efficiently.
With demolition set to begin in Zone 5 and subsequently continue in Zones 4, 3, and 2, this phase represents a significant step in transforming the site. The work will be conducted with the utmost attention to safety standards and environmental impact, ensuring a responsible progression towards site clearance.
Phase 3 represents the final and most intensive stage of the demolition process, involving both mechanical demolition and controlled explosive events to remove the remaining large structures on-site.
This phase focuses on the complex dismantling of critical areas, such as the chimney in Zone 2 and key buildings in Zone 1. By combining advanced demolition techniques and meticulous planning, Phase 3 aims to ensure a safe and effective clearance of the site, paving the way for future redevelopment while minimising disruptions to the surrounding community.
Community promise
Our Community Promise is at the core of this project, ensuring that local residents and stakeholders are not only informed but actively considered throughout every phase. We are dedicated to maintaining open and honest communication, providing regular updates, and promptly addressing any concerns. Through public consultations, informational sessions, and collaborative initiatives like the Aberthaw Academii partnership, we commit to fostering a sense of shared purpose and transparency. By prioritising the community's well-being and actively listening to their feedback, we aim to minimise disruption and create lasting, positive outcomes for the region.
FAQs
The Aberthaw Project aims to repurpose the former Aberthaw Power Station site in South East Wales into a sustainable, multi-use low carbon destination for renewable energy, low-carbon technology, and economic development, supporting regional sustainability and direct/indirect job creation.
The goal is to create a low-carbon destination for businesses that support and utilise low-carbon energy generation, invest in green technology industries and ultimately increase local and regional economic growth through the creation of high-quality employment opportunities.
A mix of low-carbon renewable energy sources is being explored, including solar power, wind turbines, tidal power, small modular reactors (SMR) etc. and potentially hydrogen production from one or more of these sources. Any project considered will be based on feasibility studies, site conditions, and environmental impact assessments.
The Aberthaw project will hopefully generate jobs, provide educational opportunities, attract investment, and enhance existing infrastructure as well as providing new. It also aims to create publicly accessible recreational spaces on site.
Any project will undergo a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to minimise negative impacts, enhance biodiversity, and improve the local ecosystem’s long-term health.
Yes, community engagement is key for CCR Energy. The team will involve residents, businesses, and organisations through public consultations, informational sessions, and collaborative planning.
Currently in the demolition, remediation, planning, and early development stages, the demolition phase will take up to three years (Spring 2027). Construction, remediation and operational phases will hopefully progress in conjunction with the demolition stage of the project as commercial opportunities develop.
The project will create jobs in renewable energy, green technology, construction, site maintenance, education, and research, focusing on building a skilled workforce for sustainable industries.
Community members can participate through public consultations, volunteer programmes, and stakeholder meetings. Regular updates on project progress, events, and participation opportunities will be shared on the CCR Energy News/Events website, social media channels.
Our focus is on sustainable projects like renewable energy production, battery storage and projects that this support such as green hydrogen facilities, manufacturing, innovation etc.
CCR Energy is not considering an incinerator on site, and no proposals have been submitted.
Safety is a priority during all phases, with strict health and safety regulations and risk assessments in place. For more information, contact the Aberthaw Project team through CCR Energy website or email us enquiries@ccrenergy.com
