Offering Unique Opportunities for Young Learners

Last month, CCR Energy invited several learners from Cardiff and Vale College to attend Aberthaw Power Station to engage with activity taking place on site. The learners, currently enrolled on the Public Services course – level 2 and 3 – were given a brief talk on the history, and future plans for the Aberthaw Site, before going to observe a training exercise led by South Wales Police.

The Public Services course at Cardiff and Vale College exposes learners to focus on the study of the uniformed services, offering key areas of knowledge across the numerous parts of the public services. One learner said they have used the course “to gain real world insights and experiences before joining the armed forces.”

Previously, the course has taken individuals to see and experience live scenarios, to gain an understanding of how different agencies will work together to achieve their particular goals.

Nigel Williams, Site Manager at CCR Energy, said,

“We had the pleasure of welcoming a group of CAVC students to CCR Energy. The visit began with a welcome and health and safety briefing, followed by an overview of the site’s history, as well as updates on the ongoing demolition works and future plans for the site.

This was then followed by an engaging demonstration from the Armed Response Unit of South Wales Police, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The students were highly engaged throughout the visit and it was a pleasure to see their enthusiasm.”

Hannah Hughes, of Cardiff and Vale College, brought the learners to Aberthaw, and thanked CCR Energy for the experience, saying,

“Thank you so much for the great visit you put on for our learners.  Visiting the site was really interesting, and learning about the history of the site and future plans was really intriguing.  It was great to have the opportunity to discuss your experiences regarding careers and options.  The students really took that onboard which was a great help.  The training exercise itself was great, it reinforced the interest the learners already have in the Police Service.”

We are glad that we were able to host the learners at Aberthaw, and that they were able to observe scenarios that they might not have been able to see outside of the site.

Thank you to South Wales Police for allowing the observation to take place, and being so informative throughout the session.
