Solar Panel installation at Aberthaw's Ace2 Building
The view and purpose for the regeneration of Aberthaw Power Station is centralised around the use of renewable and green energy, aiding the United Kingdom in hitting its Net Zero target. The last coal powered power station being shut down on October 1st symbolises a significant shift in how we generate power as a nation, and we are aiming to have Aberthaw Power Station at the forefront of that for the Southeast Wales region.
Our first step in moving Aberthaw towards a low carbon site has been by working with InspireGreen, who have provided us with upgraded solar panelling for our Ace2 building, funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. 20kWp of Solar PV, 4kWh of battery storage, and a dual pillar 22kW Electric Vehicle charger were installed by Inspire Green, providing clean green energy for our building, and kickstarting our journey for a low carbon organisation. The panels and systems in place had used innovative technology to maximise their performance for the building, including (with consideration to the coastal location of our site) exceptionally durable panels and mounting systems built to withstand the contrasting conditions that the Welsh coastal region has to offer.
On speaking about the project, Josh Powell , founder of Inspire Green, said “Contributing to the repurposing of Aberthaw Power Station, once the UK’s largest coal-powered facility, is a fantastic milestone for us all. Collaborating with CCR Energy, we crafted a comprehensive renewables solution for the Ace2 Building, integrating solar PV, battery storage, and EV charging. Over its lifetime, this setup will save an estimated 90 tons of CO₂—equivalent to planting over 4,150 trees. Revitalizing such a historic site with clean, renewable energy has been an inspiring project, symbolizing a shift toward a sustainable future for Wales.”
The Ace2 building has had solar panels since its construction in 2011, and we have certainly recognised the importance of them, so we were massively keen for them to be retained by other businesses.
We feel deeply fortunate that we were able to repurpose our used solar panels to Boomerang Cardiff, a homeless/poverty organisation, who aim to help citizens that live on the streets right across Cardiff and parts South Wales. Boomerang do significant work across Cardiff to aid those suffering with poverty and homelessness, priding themselves on an ability to help individuals and families quickly and efficiently. We are glad that our solar panels could go to an organisation that does so much for their region, clearly proving themselves to be an invaluable asset to their communities.
On speaking about the repurposing of the solar panels, Paul Gwilym , CEO and founder of Boomerang Cardiff said, “Thank you so much for this and thank you for your support in helping us achieve our objectives daily in our community helping those in times of need. Together is better let’s make a better community for all.”
We have enjoyed working and collaborating with Inspire Green, who provided an outstanding service for the Ace2 building, and Boomerang Cardiff who work towards a meaningful cause for individuals and families across Cardiff and South Wales.
