CCR Energy has progressed to Stage Two of its Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) testing programme at Aberthaw, marking a major step forward in understanding one of the UK’s largest PFA stockpiles.
As part of this next phase, CCR Energy is inviting accredited laboratories and specialist consultancies to tender for a comprehensive programme of laboratory testing and technical analysis. The work will be carried out on PFA samples collected from the Aberthaw ash mound and will support a detailed assessment of the material’s physical, geochemical, and environmental characteristics.
Commenting on the significance of the programme, Paul Matthews, Chair of CCR Energy, said:
“The Aberthaw site contains approximately 18 million tonnes of Pulverised Fuel Ash, making it one of the largest PFA stockpiles in the UK.
Once regarded as a waste by-product from the former coal-fired power station, the material is now recognised as a potentially high-value resource across a range of circular economy applications.
The challenge – and opportunity – is to establish how valuable it can be.”

The Stage Two testing programme will help CCR Energy build a robust evidence base to inform future decisions on the long-term management and potential reuse of PFA, supporting responsible site stewardship and the development of sustainable, circular economy outcomes.
Organisations wishing to tender are expected to demonstrate:
- UKAS accreditation
- Proven experience in PFA or coal combustion residue analysis
- Expertise across geochemical, physical, and environmental testing disciplines
